Main types of diabetes
There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes:
- Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, the body produces little to no insulin.
- This type of diabetes often develops during childhood or adolescence, although it can occur at any age.
- People with type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy to survive. They need to monitor their blood sugar levels regularly and adjust insulin doses accordingly.
Type 2 Diabetes:
- Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for around 90% of cases worldwide. It typically develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels.
- Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, family history, and certain ethnicities.
- Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes can often be managed with lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, regular physical activity, and weight management. Medications or insulin therapy may also be necessary in some cases.
Gestational Diabetes:
- Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy when the body becomes resistant to insulin production. This condition increases the risk of complications for both the mother and baby.
- Gestational diabetes usually resolves after childbirth, but women who have had gestational diabetes are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
